Abu Dhabi Airport Completes Terminal 1 Refurbishment

The refurbishment and upgrading works of Terminal 1 at Abu Dhabi International Airport, which expands its passenger handling capacity has been completed.

The project won ADAC 'the GCC Commercial Project of the Year' from the Construction Week Awards held on Monday 31 October at the Westin Hotel in Dubai.

The refurbishment project included an increase in the number of check-in and immigration counters, and the expansion and development of the retail and F&B space.

The project was carried out over 10 months as part of the programme to expand the airport capacity and meet the anticipated traffic growth, whilst completing the longer term expansion plans of the capital?s airport through building new terminals and facilities.

The completed project was also designed to deliver a high quality facility and upgraded services in Terminal 1 in line with the Terminal 3 offerings.

The terminal's refurbishment focuses on delivering to travelers a rejuvenated travel experience from start to end. Upon arrival to the airport, passengers are greeted through new entry gates, leading to passport control area, where the number of counters has increased by 40% to ensure a more speedy processing of travel documents. A designated area has also been especially allocated for First and Business Class passengers, with brand new security screening facilities.

The number of Immigrations Department in the departure area has been increased as well, as has the number of designated counters and E-Gates for travelers with special needs.

Additionally, passengers now enjoy an enhanced shopping and dining experience through the new developed layout of the retail and food & beverage space, which has been enhanced to offer 27 outlets.

The airport hotel and hospitality lounges have also undergone a thorough makeover.

At Abu Dhabi Airports Company, we are constantly striving to elevate the travel experience and ensure clients, whether passengers or airlines, enjoy a unique journey. Driven from this ambition, T1 underwent a thorough and carefully designed upgrade plan to bring it in line with Terminal 3, and ensure that customers using any part of Abu Dhabi International Airport will have a refreshing and efficient start or end to their journey, said Eng. Ahmed Al Haddabi, Chief Operating Officer at Abu Dhabi Airports Company. The refurbishment works were carried out in phases, taking into consideration the peak hours to ensure travelers? safety, convenience  and comfort over the last 10 months, and to provide ADAC with a short-term solution to cater for the expected traffic growth at the Capital's airport in the coming few years.

Abu Dhabi Airport Reports Q3 2011 Traffic

During the third quarter of 2011 Abu Dhabi Airport recorded a 15% increase in passenger traffic compared with the same period in 2010.

Some 3.3 million passengers passed through the capital?s airport during the period July to September 2011 surpassing for the first time the 1 million milestone for three consecutive months.

A total of 1,086,348 passengers passing through the airport in September, a double digit increase of 17.1% compared to the same month last year.

The increase in last quarter?s passenger traffic was mainly driven by Eid and summer holidays, Omra, the inauguration of new airlines and the frequency increases and new destinations introduced by most of the carriers at Abu Dhabi International Airport, mainly Etihad Airways.

Cargo volumes presented a parallel growth to that of passenger traffic with a recorded 10.8% increase in the month of September alone, and a further 7% increase over the July- September 2011 period, compared with same periods last year. The recorded increases are a result of the healthy economic growth witnessed in Abu Dhabi along with the increased cargo activity by Etihad Airways.

Commenting on this, Eng. Ahmad Al Haddabi, Chief Operating Officer at Abu Dhabi Airports Company (ADAC), said, ?The passenger activity increases at Abu Dhabi international Airport are certainly a positive economic indicator for the UAE and the region. It is especially encouraging that we are seeing sustained growth throughout the year. We are thrilled with the positive passenger activity results of the third quarter of this year and it is clear that both business and leisure travelers are choosing Abu Dhabi International more and more as their portal to the world.?

The top five routes in the third quarter of 2011 include London, Bangkok, Doha, Jeddah, and Manila.

Strong Demand for Self Service Systems @ Abu Dhabi Airport

Passengers at Abu Dhabi International Airport (AUH) have the highest demand for Self Service options of all six major airport hubs included in this year?s SITA/Air Transport World Passenger Self Service Survey, which also found high rates of smartphone adoption among premium travelers. It is the first time that AUH has featured in the survey.
The demand for Self Service is partly fuelled by smartphone adoption rates of 78% for frequent flyers (over ten trips per year) and 35% among business/first class travelers. The survey reveals a clear opportunity for airlines to increase the use of mobile check-in, which had only been used by 12% of survey respondents compared to 38% who had used online check-in.
In AUH, 33% of the passengers surveyed had a smartphone and a further 50% had ordinary mobile phones. The Blackberry was the most popular with 41% of smartphone holders having one, followed by 26% having an iPhone. Globally, 35% of respondents preferred the iPhone compared to 28% who used the Blackberry.
The rising influence of the smartphone globally is a key finding from the 6th annual SITA/Air Transport World Passenger Self Service Survey carried out with a representative sample of the 283.5 million passengers who pass through six of the world?s leading airport hubs: Abu Dhabi International Airport, Beijing International Airport; Frankfurt International Airport; Hartsfield-Jackson, Atlanta; Mumbai International; and Sao Paulo Guarulhos.
Interest in mobile applications is high at AUH where 30% of respondents would be willing to pay for information updates sent directly to their mobile phones. Interest is highest in flight-related information such as gate changes, flight delays, and boarding status, which 80% of survey respondents would use if available. This is followed by wait time at security, 50%; time to reach departure gate, 42%; information on airport parking, 35%; and location of closest lounge, 33%.
And 73% of AUH smartphone users would access a free Wi-Fi network compared to 66% globally. At AUH 15% would be willing to pay for Wi-Fi access compared to 10% globally.
AUH passenger interest in Self Service is underlined by the fact that it has the highest success rate in the survey when it comes to encouraging passengers to use remote bag-drop facilities, which was an option used by 13% of passengers with a bag to check-in compared with a rate of just 1% in the survey overall.
On the other hand, only 4% reported using a bag-drop counter compared to a global rate of 42%. A higher proportion of passengers had a bag to check-in than at any other airport in the survey, 81% compared to an overall survey rate of 67%.
The appetite for Self Service options is high at AUH. Self-bag tag (81%), Self Service bag drop (76%), and self-boarding (74%) were the three most popular Self Service options sought by AUH survey respondents, followed by tracking of bag location from a mobile device (67%), transfer kiosks (63%), and reporting missing bag from kiosks (63%).
Retail travel agencies are still more popular with AUH travelers than elsewhere with 44% of respondents using them for bookings compared to 17% overall but, interestingly, the overwhelming majority, a massive 99% of those who choose to book their flights online did so through an airline website compared to the global survey figure of 52%.
There is a clear opportunity here for airlines to target AUH passengers with improved non-air offers on their websites as actual usage rates for modifying reservations on-line and purchasing other services are 32% or lower.
Hani El Assaad, SITA Regional Vice-President, Middle East and North Africa, said, ?It is exciting to see Abu Dhabi International Airport feature in the Passenger Self Service Survey for the first time and to be able to provide the airport and airlines with this unprecedented insight into the behaviors and attitudes of their customers. The survey reveals many opportunities to provide services to passengers which will generate revenue, increase efficiency and improve passenger satisfaction.?
